The most enriching part of the National Costume showcase at a high profile pageant such as Binibining Pilipinas is the story behind a design concept. The amount of creativity and brain work to put together a cohesive and beautiful national wear can be a task too daunting for new designers.
Fortunately, Kapampangan designer Rich Sabinian not only wove stories into his masterpiece, but also enjoined the skills of Pampangas’s Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL).
Sabinian is the creative force behind Binibining Pilipinas 2019 candidate Emma Tiglao’s gold-and-white national costume. Binibini Pampanga, Emma Tiglao, who participated in the creative process, visited the Angeles District Jail to meet the men behind her beautiful cultural wear.
The fabric used by Sabinian to create the gold-embellished Filipiniana gown is hand woven by PDL basket weavers residing at the Angeles District Jail.
In her white top that screamed Kapampangan pride, Tiglao showed gratitude to this men by spending time with them and listening to their stories.
In a Facebook post, the jail management expressed their gratitude towards Tiglao and Sabinian for trusting the skills of the Kapampangan PDL. They said,
“Kapampangan ku, Pagmaragul ku!”
