It’s no longer surprising how Binibining Pilipinas has attracted fans from other countries including Philippines’ self-proclaimed rival Indonesia. Despite winning just one Major League crown (Miss International 2017), our neighbors to the south pride themselves of being in the same league as the Philippines in beauty pageants.
Philippines has 15 Major League crowns (4 Misses Universe, 1 Miss World, 6 Misses International and 4 Misses Earth).
Indonesian fans of Binibining Pilipinas has found another target to land their jabs against a possible Filipina queen. Their new-found victim: Binibini Masbate Hannah Arnold.
Indonesian fans were quick to point out the similarities between the national costume of former Miss Grand Indonesia Dea Rizkita which featured a sexy bodice and a train with fixture at end.
The structure may be similar but the aesthetic is very different. The design brief and the intended meaning is world’s apart.
Dea Rizkita’s national costume depicts that of a female deity in Indonesia guarding over the Jakarta skyline. Arnold’s is a humble take on the culture of the Cordillera and its oldest mababatok, Apo Whang Od.
