Only three years following Pia Wurtzbach’s drought-breaking win at Miss Universe, Catriona Gray proved that the Philippines is a powerhouse of beauty at Miss Universe. The country has been sending strong girls since 2010 which saw Miss Philippines Venus Raj finally breaking the Top 5 and going home as her edition’s 4th runner-up.
Raj’s strong showing was furthered by Shamcey Supsup who was Miss Universe 2011 3rd Runner-Up. Falling a spot short of the title was Janine Tugonon at Miss Universe 2012. The golden binibini who sported a sleek straight hair at the finale tied Supsup’s as Miss Universe 2013 3rd Runner-Up. Reaching the Top 10 was fan favorite MJ Lastimosa at the 2014 edition.
After the disappointing 2014 finish, Pia Wurtzbach braved the odds and finally won the title in 2015. Her win erased a four-decade title drought cementing the country’s status as a pageant powerhouse.
Wurtzbach’s performance was followed by a Top 6 finish, courtesy of Maxine Medina, whose question-and-answer waterloo disappointed the home crowd when the pageant was held for the third time in the Philippines. Rachel Peters, a statuesque beauty, reached Top 10, dousing the hopes of Filipino pageant fans.
In a revenge of sorts, Catriona Gray smothered the competition in both the national and international level. After her disappointing finish at Miss World 2016, the beautiful lass made sure that she got the Miss Universe 2018 crown in the bag.
After the country’s strong performance at the pageant for the last 9 years, will the 10th Miss Universe Philippines since Venus Raj started the winningest decade of Philippine pageantry be able to win the country a rare back-to-back win at Miss Universe?
Possible and very likely.
With the quality of beauties who applied at this year’s pageant, the likelihood of a back-to-back win is more than possible.
In my opinion, the four strongest delegates for the top crown so far this year are #Binibini17 Bea Patricia “Patch” Magtanong, #Binibini18 Hannah Arnold, #Binibini13 Maria Andrea Abesamis and #Binibini26 Emma Tiglao.
Binibini 17 Bea Patricia “Patch” Magtanong
Pageant insiders have been waiting on this girl to join Bb. Pilipinas for the last five years. Patch decided to take her time and finish her law degree first before joining the national pageant. Eloquent and lady-like in her demeanor, Patch Magtanong has been delivering the goods so far, earning the respect and admiration of pageant fans.
She has, by far, been earning rave reviews from observers. Her social media numbers have been crunching a good number compared to her fellow hopefuls. Her excellent communication skills and unmistakable Filipina beauty will serve her well in the pageant.
Patch Magtanong inherits the number from one of last year’s top candidate Ahtisa Manalo. The title is seldom bestowed to the same number consecutively so I wouldn’t expect her to be crowned Bb. Pilipinas – International.
Binibini 18 Hannah Arnold
This statuesque Australian beauty who stands at 5’11 is reminiscent of Catriona Gray. She is an independent candidate, which makes her not indebted to any pageant camp in her journey. Like Gray, she has a robust group of supporters.
While she shares some outstanding characteristic with the reigning Miss Universe, Arnold has her own unique plus side. Hannah finished Forensic Studies at the University of Canberra.
She assembled her own style team. With her on-point looks, she just needs to polish her personality and communication skills to fit the job vacancy of the Miss Universe Philippines.
Binibini13 Maria Andrea Abesamis
Having talked to her team, I am told that Aya, as many of her close friends call her, has found the hunger for the crown this year. This year, Aya Abesamis began her preparations earlier than most candidates. Like Arnold, she has assembled a strong styling team to help her go far in the competition, and some of the best names in the pageant world to help her in her journey to the Qrown.
We can expect good things from Aya this year.
Binibini 26 Emma Tiglao
Like Patch Magtanong, pageant observers have been waiting for Emma to join Bb Pilipinas anew. Tiglao is no stranger to the pageant world as she has been mopping the competition on the local and national level.
Her amazing stature and walk can catapult her to join the ranks of MJ Lastimosa and Rachel Peters, Kagandahang Flores’ best bets at Miss Universe.
