“This is coming from my heart and i hope everyone reads this with respect,” starts renowned Cebu-based fashion designer Cary Santiago on her Facebook post.
Miss Santiago is the creative legend behind the origami dress that Gazini Ganados wore at Binibining Pilipinas 2019.
She laments the negative feedback of pageant followers who belt out negative criticism of her work with Miss Gazini.
“I have received a lot of messages asking what Gazini will wear for Miss Universe 2019,” reveals Miss Cary. “Some (gave) suggestion, others are appreciative while a number of them are bashing me for my work/s.”
“There comments: (I) dont like it, (I) find it heavy or bulky, “tama na ang birds”, “why the same style”, a couple are even giving below the belt comments that are unprintable.”
The attention and the pressure of dressing up a Miss Universe contestant, especially the girl who will be wearing the Philippine sash, is not something that the designer wishes to entertain.
” And (I) get all these messages every single day. Some are from troll accounts while most are from legit ones.”
‘Fashion does not revolve around pageants’
Miss Santiago reveals that she is neither an enthusiast or an expert of pageants.
“It just so happen that (I) am able to dress up a few beauty queens (because) either (I) know them personally or (I) know someone that is close to them and they asked me to.”
Miss Cary says that she is happy that these girls get to wear her design.
The Miss Universe Competition Gown
The final design, silhoutte and color is a decision of Gazini and me. It is a collaboration.
Santiago is a high fashion designer who has been working with the upper echelons of the Philippine society.
She claims that the people she works with are the real fashion expert.
‘Beauty pageants has never been the barometer of fashion.’
Miss Cary does not want to carry the burden of regular commenters and messages.
She just wishes Gazini Ganados the best of luck.
“If the stars will align that night, whatever Gazini will wear, it will happen. If she gets a podium-finish, that’s her discipline, perseverance and a whole lot of luck. So let us support her and as we continue to join her journey towards the crown,”
