All 95 delegates of the 2018 Miss Universe pageant attended a special welcome dinner hosted by Bangkok to officially open the Miss Universe pageant.
Among the storied selfies that came out Tuesday night is one by Miss Colombia Valeria Morales and Miss Spain Angela Ponce.
The selfie seemed to be one where the delegates bury the proverbial hatchet to show that differences in opinion should not lead to personal rows between delegates.
Last October, Miss Colombia Valeria Morales was under fire after she was quoted to saying that Miss Universe is “for women who are born women.”
Many speculated that her response might trigger a backlash when she arrives at Bangkok which has long been a haven for a vibrant trans community.
Miss Spain Angela Ponce, who makes history as the first transgender woman to officially join Miss Universe, posted on Instagram months before the pageant, “I will never try to change her opinion, that’s not my role,”
She added: “My goal is to make people aware of my reality and to talk a little to the world about the lack of education on diversity, an important factor that without doubt leads to so much bullying, prejudices and violence.”
Ponce reiterated her openness to get to know Morales, “I want to have a lovely experience and if she wants to get to know me, I would also like to get to know her.👑
